The Rock Creek site is where one of the western migration's worst disasters and heroic efforts took place in 1856. This is the western side of Rocky Ridge. During Oct. of 1856 handcart pioneers were trapped by an early blizzard. A massive rescue effort was launched by Brigham Young from Salt Lake City . Rocky Ridge is where the first rescue party reached the dying pioneers. Over 200 perished between here and Martin's Cove to the east. Lots of interesting faith promoting experiences from both the rescuers and the rescued. Be sure to stop by South Pass City Historic site, (see below) and the Atlantic City Mercantile. Highway 28 from here west to the Green River roughly follows the original pioneer trail.
